Stefan Al

PhD, MSc, MArch, LEED AP

Stefan Al is a Dutch architect, and urban planner. Besides spearheading his own architectural practice, Al has the illustrious appointments of Director of the Urban Design Program and Assistant Professor at the Department of Urban Planning and Design at the University of Hong Kong.

In a dynamic career to date, Al has worked on multiple world-renowned architectural projects across a multiple of continents. Amongst Al’s more notable contributions are the 612 meter high Canton Tower in Guangzhou, the preservation of world heritage in Latin America at the World Heritage Center of UNESCO, and the 4450-hectare new eco-friendly Nanocity in India.

Al has been invited by established publications, esteemed universities, and international government bodies to share his in-depth insights and vast experiences on architecture and urbanism. His writing has been published internationally including a feature in the reputed Handbook of Architectural Theory. He is currently editing an illustrated guidebook which provides a critical perspective of Chinese factory towns, and writing another on Las Vegas as a visible model of the way contemporary cities transform.

Al is fiercely passionate about architecture; he’s a Founding Member of the Hong Kong Institute of Urban Design, a member of Hong Kong’s Harbourfront Commission, an EU-licensed architect, and a LEED Accredited Professional.

Al holds multiple degrees from various prestigious universities. He holds a M.Sc. in Architecture with distinction from Delft University of Technology, an M.Arch. from the Bartlett in London, and a Ph.D. from the Department of City and Regional Planning at the University of California at Berkeley.
